Allen Carleton Nydegger was born in Baltimore County Maryland, June 24, 1886. He attended the University of West Virginia where he received a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He relocated to Florida as the land boom began. He lived in Winter Haven, Florida and St. Petersburg, Florida. In 1911 he was contracted by the four partners of the Lake Wales Land Company to plot out a new community 15 miles east of the Polk County government seat of Bartow, Florida. Allen Carleton Nydegger and his crew camped on the shores of Crystal Lake and spent months plotting out the community that would become Lake Wales, Florida. In 1976 A.C. Nydegger donated his papers to the Lake Wales Public Library. His archives include maps of many communities in Polk County, DeSoto County and Highlands County. Also included are personal letters, his field guide, surveying equipment and drawings from his years as a student at the University of West Virginia. Mr. Nydegger died at the age of 95, March 31, 1981 in St. Petersburg, Florida.
